Magicians keep the secrets of magic very close to the vest. While it is true that a magician does not tell how a trick is done, that does not preclude them from teaching an aspiring magician how to do an effect.
That is the main distinction; we can’t tell you how it is done, but we can teach you how to do it. The difference is in the motivation of the recipient of the information.
Mike Skinner was a great teacher of magic and mentor to many who sought out his knowledge and expertise.
